Illustrator Workshop @ XPACE

This Illustrator (and some Photoshop!) workshop will teach you all of the "101" type things you need to know about these Adobe programs. Some specific things we're going to cover is how to set up a document, shape manipulation, photo importing, image processing, what all those keyboard shortcuts do, document layout and more. This workshop is three hours long with a break in the middle. We'll be starting at 1pm sharp, so be sure to get there on time! Bringing a laptop will be extremely helpful to each participant, but it's not mandatory. If you can buddy up with somebody else's computer and take turns trying things out, that would be good, too.


This workshop will take place on Saturday April 14, from 1-4pm @ XPACE Cultural Centre.

Q: What is this good for?
A: Your next gallery show invite, your zines and bookworks, posters, and other publications. It's also extremely helpful to acquaint yourself with Adobe software. A lot of the basic functions are similar and it will be easier to learn other programs if you already know one or two.

Q: What should I bring besides myself?
A: A laptop if you have one (with a mouse!), a notepad, a pen, and some coffee (no spilling).

Cost for this workshop is $10.

FEAST 04

Xpace hosted FEAST 04 this past weekend where guests gathered to hear out artist proposals for micro-funding while dining on some fantastic vegetarian food. Zach Pearl won the vote to develop his website Wrecking Ball TO. For the student grant, Melissa Luk took the prize to develop her comics newspaper.

FEAST 05 will be taking place on Sunday July 29, 2012, 6pm, @ Xpace Cultural Centre. If you are interested in attending the next FEAST, tickets will be available in July. Join FEAST's mailing list on www.feast-toronto.com, or email info@feast-toronto.com.

Artist Statement Workshop @ XPACE

When: Saturday, February 4, 2012, 1:00pm until 5:00pm
Where: XPACE Cultural Centre, 58 Ossington Ave, Toronto.

 

 

According to Wikipdia, an Artist Statement is...
'a text composed by an artist and intended to explain, justify, extend, and/or contextualize his or her body of work.'

But WHAT exactly makes a good or bad artist statement? And how does one write an artist statement in such a way that ANYONE, yes, even your mother, can understand what your work is about?

XPACE intends to show you exactly how to do this. We will have both good and bad statements, written by artists we have worked with, to give specific examples of common mistakes and pitfalls almost all artists make. Remember, writing an artist statement doesn't have to be an awful experience of watching a blinking cursor in an empty document. Writing about your work in an appropriate and concise way is an invaluable skill to have!

Collage & Mail Art Party @ XPACE

Hear ye Hear ye,

CUT AND PASTE your way to fame, right this way,

XPACE will be hosting an afternoon of Collage and Mail Art making this Saturday. Totally broke for the holidays? No problem! Make something special to give to your people, or send some REAL mail to friends and family far away. We will provide some scissors, glue sticks, paper and source material, as well as envelope templates and stamps!

We will be screening 'How to Draw a Bunny' a documentary about the legendary collage and mail artist Ray Johnson. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!



We encourage you to bring:

MAGAZINES, BOOKS, PHOTOCOPIES, FOUND GARBAGE, FABRIC, GLUE STICKS, EXACTO KNIVES, SCISSORS, ENVELOPES, PAPER etc

Laura Paolini's recent work, I'm Tired of Being Fucked, is being featured in XPACE's Window Space. The artist explores some of the undesired aspects of a creative lifestyle and the absurdity of struggling for ownership, or an ideal.

The Gang Takes a Field Trip I

Nothing beats a Thursday afternoon field trip. In a bout of spontaneity, the XPACE gang closed shop for an hour and headed to the Meredith Keith Gallery to check out "Sweet Asbestos" by Montreal-based artist Cythia Girard.

Girard makes a sociopolitical statement of Canadian right-wing conservative politics through her pieces that combine various media, ranging from sculpture to painting to quilting. If you'd like to read more about her project, visit her blog at http://sweetasbestos.blogspot.com/

DANCE YOUR PANTS OFF!

XPACE will be hosting an UNDERWEAR DANCE PARTY* for the closing reception of Lindsay Denise’s “Dancing With Myself & Others,” which has been on display for the past 4 weeks.
Attendees are encouraged to participate in the exhibit through exhibitionism and share their groovy moves. DJ FoodCourt will take the lid off your id and dish out the dirty dance-pop ditties you secretly crave. Feast on guilty pleasures from across the decades as we launch the bedroom dance party into XPACE.

FEATURING:

OCADU Hip-Hop Collective, I.B. Scene to kick-off the night with a freestyle throw-down! Starting at 8:00pm.

OCADU Zine Collective will be selling zines made by OCAD U students, showing samples of the zines from their library, and teaching people how to make a quick book with just a 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper and a pair of scissors.

*Dress code is definitely not mandatory! Wear what makes you comfortable!

Stormy Hands @ XPACE's External Space

Join us at XPACE's External Space (located in the Jim Meekison student lounge to the left of the cafe and Great Hall at OCADU) for an artist talk by Sarah D'Angelo, and screening of her two claymation videos: It Speaks to Me and her most recent, Stormy Hands.


Stormy Hands will be unveiled at the talk, and will continue to be screened for the month of November. The videos will be accompanied by an essay by Xenia Benivolski, about the works.

Whippersnapper Gallery is currently seeking submissions for the 2012 summer programming season. Titled “Not just the picture”, its intention is to explore the ways in which burgeoning practices revolving around new-media, internet and digital technologies influence and impact themselves upon public space, our relationships and our social structures. As a generation that has matured throughout young adulthood and increasingly adolescence and childhood, immersed in social spheres mediated by internet platforms like facebook, twitter, second life etc. we are increasingly reliant on these platforms. How does this participation in proxy worlds shape our relationships to one another? How have our relationships to our civil and cultural institutions been effected by a virtualization of experience. How is our understanding of public space (online or real world) debased, strengthened or otherwise altered through the exponential growth and integration of technology in our lives?
