The Blackwood Gallery is seeking to fill multiple positions for Running With Scissors Contemporary Art Summer Camps. The weeklong programs are designed to introduce contemporary art to children and youth ages 5 to 12. Inspired by contemporary art history as well as traditional methods, campers will be able to experiment with a variety of artistic media including painting, drawing, sculpture, mixed media, performance, and more.
We are hiring for the following positions:

- Visual Art Instructors
- Recreation Instructor
- Aftercare Providers.

Program Coordinator
2 Positions Available, $15/h

Job Description
Program Coordinators are responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the camp. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, leading a team of 5 instructors, reserving classrooms and proper tech equipment, answering parent questions related to camp programming and registration, ordering supplies, and managing budgets.
Additional Responsibilities
-Assist in the research and development of age-appropriate arts programming for school-aged children.
-Supervise classroom instruction regularly and report back to the Outreach Coordinator on a weekly basis.
-Submit a final report and recommendations at the conclusion of the summer.
-Recruit, hire, and manage volunteers.
-Ensure all materials and activities are safe for children.
Qualifications
-Enrollment in an accredited post-secondary institution studying arts administration, art history, visual arts, childhood education, or a related field (Preference given to students returning full-time in September 2012).
-Strong knowledge of contemporary art and art practices required.
-Strong communication, programming, and organizational skills.
-Previous experience working with school-aged children in an educational or day camp setting.
-Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite and Photoshop.
-Experience managing budgets.
-Demonstrated ability to work in a team.
-Access to a car is an asset but not a requirement.
Visual Art Instructor

Job Description
Visual art instructors are responsible for teaching studio art workshops, demonstrating techniques, and introducing school aged children from diverse backgrounds to contemporary art, using practicing Canadian and international artists as examples.
Additional Responsibilities
-Assist in the research and development of age-appropriate arts programming for school-aged children. -Ensure all materials and activities are safe for children.
Qualifications
-Enrollment in an accredited post-secondary institution studying visual arts, art history, childhood education, or a related field (Preference given to students returning full-time in September 2012).
-Knowledge of contemporary art and art practices.
-Experience with 2 or more of the following: photography, audio art, land art, digital collage, sculpture, drawing, painting.
-Previous experience working with school aged children in an educational or day camp setting.
-Demonstrated ability to work in a team.
Recreation Instructor

Job Description
The Recreation Instructor is responsible for the development and implementation of a series of recreational activities (hikes, sports, and games) for two groups of children (5 to 8 and 9 to 12) from diverse backgrounds. Activities should promote self-esteem, positive interactions with others, and problem solving skills.
Additional Responsibilities
-Assist Visual Art Instructors with the implementation and evaluation of arts programming.
-Provide a positive learning and recreational experience for participating campers.
-Supervise camp activities, ensuring that all materials and activities are safe for children.
Qualifications
-Enrolled in an accredited post-secondary institution studying childhood education, physical education, recreation and leisure, visual arts, art history, or a related field and work experience (Preference given to students returning full-time in September 2012).
-Previous experience working with school aged children in an educational or day camp setting.
-Knowledge and/or experience working with children in a recreational setting (outdoor environmental education, sports, leadership camps).
-Programming and leadership skills.
-Demonstrated ability to work in a team.
Aftercare Provider (Part-Time)
2 Positions Available, $12/h

Job Description
The aftercare provider works alongside program coordinators, visual and recreation instructors, and gallery staff to provide after-camp care for children ages 5 to 12. Aftercare providers work an average of 2.5 hours a day, from 3:30pm – 6pm. This job would be ideal for a university summer student.
Responsibilities
-To assist instructors, coordinators and gallery staff with extended childcare.
-Camp runs from 9am – 4pm, with evening extended care provided between the hours of 4pm – 5:30pm. After-care providers would be expected to set up art and craft materials in the gallery and/or outside, and assist with the general care of children until they are picked up by their parent or guardian.
-Create a warm atmosphere where campers feel comfortable working, learning, and asking questions.
-Supervise children, provide suggestions for individual pursuits (such as reading or colouring), and promote positive interactions with others.
-Clean up all materials, and prepare the gallery for the next day's session.
Qualifications
-Previous experience working with school aged children in an educational or day camp setting.
-Knowledge and/or experience working with children in a recreational setting (outdoor environmental education, sports, leadership camps) is an asset.
-Demonstrated ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
