Call for Submissions: Web-based Media Artworks

Deadline: March 15, 2011

XPACE Cultural Centre is seeking submissions that explore the social and aesthetic possibilities of web space. As always we're looking for artists that fit with our mandate of bridging emerging artists with their counterparts and the community.

The work must be web-based, and able to be viewed as a link from our website.

How to Submit:

Applications must be submitted in a URL link that can be linked to XWEB. The work must be able to securely upload to our server.

Submissions MUST include:

* A detailed project description (maximum 200 words)

* Your CV and artist bio

* A still of the web-based work (press quality, 300dpi)

* The URL address to link to our server

Bookbinding Workshop

XPACE Cultural Center Presents: A Bookbinding Workshop

On Friday, March 4th from 6-8pm Jennie Suddick will be demonstrating varied techniques in bookbinding, such as the 4-Hole Punch and as well the Coptic Binding, which are perfect to use for sketchbooks or journals!  We will provide paper, thread, needles and scissors needed but feel free to bring any of your own materials (ie. fancy paper) with you as well.  A pen and paper, are great to have in hand if you'd like to take notes for future bookbinding as well.

Jennie Suddick is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Toronto, Canada. Her work has been exhibited in Canada, The United States, Germany and Italy. She holds both a BFA and Advanced Visual Studies Certificate from OCAD University,  where she was the recipient of multiple awards. She as well, holds a Masters of Fine Art from York University.  Jennie creates work in print, photography and sculpture, while dealing with issues of Canadian identity, cryptozoology, museological display, and hyper reality. Recently, she has shown at Board of Directors, Blackwood Gallery’s ‘Drop Out’ 2009 Nuit Blanche exhibition, The Gladstone Hotel’s upArt and participated in Hallwalls' Artists and Models: Stimulus in Buffalo, New York. She received the Award of Excellence at the 2009 Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition. Jennie also oversees the programming of XPACE Cultural Center.

Call for artworks by emerging artists in Ontario

theSHOW.11 is a renewed fourth installment of the biannual exhibition at Cambridge Galleries dedicated to promoting the work of emerging Ontario artists making contemporary artwork in a variety of media. We've changed some things this year by moving the dates and expanding the scope of the exhibition.

Cambridge Galleries is looking for artists who have been exhibiting professionally for less than 3 years or have recently completed their BFA, MFA or equivalent.

This year's exhibition will take place over the summer months at Cambridge Galleries' Queen's Square location.

theSHOW.11 will spotlight up to 12artists that represent a snapshot of fresh talent from across Ontario. Submissions in all mediums are welcomed including off site projects.

Deadline for Submissions: Thursday MARCH 31, 2011 (postmarked)

Submissions should include:

1.Completed Application Form: visit: www.cambridgegalleries.ca > exhibitions or contact the gallery
2.1 page CV
3.10 PC compatible jpgs of artwork completed during the last two years on CD-ROM
4.Up to 5 minutes of video on DVD for time-based proposals

Please note: submissions that are incomplete, sent by fax or email will not be considered. The gallery assumes no responsibility for materials that have been damaged, lost of mislabeled. Submissions will not be returned. The gallery will contact successful applicants by May 1, 2011. All selections are final.

BENEATH

In The Unknown Craftsman, Soetsu Anagi says  "To see is to go directly to the Core.... To know facts about, is to go around the periphery. Beauty is a kind of mystery, which is why it cannot be grasped adequately through the intellect".

The student curated, exhibition BENEATH, follows the deconstruction of 11 individuals moving towards the essential.

The show is running until March 5th in OCAD University's Transit space.                           Artist featured are: Matthew Del Degan, Sofia Escobar, Jennifer Gordon, Gabriela Hansen, Torin Ellery Hastings, Singithi Kandage, Megan Kee, Christopher Lim
Rishabh Varshney, Di Vy and myself Aisha-Zalika Simpson.

Transit Space is located on the 2nd floor, and is adjacent to the fiber studios.

note: This post has taken way too long to put up because of all of the crazy things happening recently but this is long overdue. Sorry for the delay!

“FEAST (Funding Emerging Artists with Sustainable Tactics) is a community dinner and funding event. Artists and designers are invited to present proposals for art-or design-based, community-oriented projects during the dinner. Everyone attending the dinner votes on which project they would like to fund, and the project with the most votes is given a grant from the money that is raised from the dinner. FEAST is organized by Amber Landgraff and Deborah Wang, with chef Lisa Myers. Our first dinner is co-presented with XPACE Cultural Centre, sponsored by A Space Gallery and Amsterdam Beer, and supported by Fuse Magazine.” – FEAST T.O. Blog
